Thalassemia ) with Special Made Herbal Remedy

Based on the TCM theory of “kidney generates marrow”, 41 cases of b-mediterranean anemia
from a highly endemic area in Guangxi were treated. Of whom, 29 cases were treated with special
made herbal decoction for 3 months, 28 were effective and another 12 cases were treated with
instant granules of the same herbal formula, all effective.
The comparison was made between the TCM treatment group and control group 13 cases treated
with western medication—myleran. The TCM treatment group is less side effect and result last
longer after stopping admistration.
The result showed that the treatment group was markedly effective and superior to the control
group. Systemic analysis on gene was also made on the patients, in the aspects of the relationship
between genetic mutation and therapeutic effect, genetic expression and modulation for the study
of its molecular mechanism. This study also gives the possible mechanism of thalassemia
treatment by Chinese remedy: putting forward a hypothesis claiming that Chinese theory is its
theoretical core as “kidney generates marrow”. Its objectivity was identified, thus offering the
scientific support for the traditional Chinese medicine theory and practice of thalassemia treatment.
