Zhang Yougui (Hospital of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Affiliated to Anhui College of TCM)
Journal of Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Vol. 21, No. 1, 2001

Purpose
To observe the therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment on primary fibromyalgia syndrome. To
compare the therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment and amitrityline medication on primary
fibromyalgia syndrome.

Clinical Information
64 cases in total, male 12 cases, female 52 cases. Age: between 23 and 64, average age 36. Course
of disease: 4 month to 20 year, average 2.5 year. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups:
acupuncture treatment group – 34 cases, amitrityline treatment group – 30 cases. The therapeutic
effects on 2 groups were compared.
All cases were diagnosed with international standards and ruled out rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis
etc. similar disorders.

Treatment
Acupuncture group
:
Acupuncture Points: BL 18, 20, 17, ST 36, SP 6, PC 6, and Ashi Points.
Methods: apply even stimulation techniques on all points. Retain needles for 30 minutes; rotate the
needles once during those 30 minutes. Treat once per day. 10 session is a treatment course. Take 2
days off the treatment between the courses. All cases were treated 1 –3 courses.
Amitrityline group:
Administer Amitrityline (to be considered as most popular and effective medication to Fibromyalgia so
far) 25 mg orally 0.5 hour before bedtime daily. 30-day treatment is taken by all cases in the group.

Result
Table #1
Therapeutic effect at the end of the treatment courses

Table #2
Therapeutic effect at 6 month after the end of the treatment courses

  • Marked relieve: clinical symptoms and manifestations were disappeared or all most
disappeared, sleep back to normal, anxiety and depression, etc. emotional and mental reactions
    were markedly less.
  • Some relieve: clinical symptoms and manifestations were less, sleeping was improved, anxiety
and depression, etc. emotional and mental reactions were less.
  • No effect: no significant changes observed.

Conclusion
At the end of treatment course there was no significant difference in both the marked relive rate and
the total relieve rate between the two groups, but 6 months after the end of therapeutic course both the
marked relieve rate and total relive rate in the acupuncture group were higher than those in the
amitrityline group (P < 0.05).

The long-term therapeutic effect in acupuncture group was superior to those in the amitrityline group.
And the patients in acupuncture group suffered none side effect from the treatment.
