Comparison of Therapeutic Effect of Acupuncture and Moxibustion on Three Types of
Peripheral Facial Paralysis

General Information
89 cases in total were treated, among them, 51 cases were male, and 38 were female. Youngest
was 9 year old, oldest was 69. 78% of patients were aged between 25 and 45. They received their
first acupuncture treatment in between 1 and 21 days after the facial paralysis.
Among 89 cases, 9 of them had medication treatment for the facial paralysis before starting
acupuncture treatment, and other 80 cases had none.
Possible inducing causes: 9 cases had common cold prior to occurrence of facial paralysis, 2 cases
had shingles, 38 cases had cold air attack, and other 40 cases had no reason.
Groups: according to international standards, 21 cases were diagnosed simple facial nerve
inflammation, 49 Bell’s facial paralysis (Bell’s Palsy), and 19 Hunt’s facial paralysis.
Treatment
Acupuncture Points: Main Points – St. 7, 4, 6, Taiyang (ext.), St. 2, Si. 18, BL 2, GB 20, TE 17, LI 4
(inparalysised side), and St. 36. Complementary Points: LI 20, GB 14, Yuyao (ext.), GV 26, CV 24,
Qianzheng (ext.), LR 3 and St. 1. Select 6 to 8 points alternately on each session.
Method: Apply reducing needling techniques on St. 36 and LI 4, and even needling techniques on
other points. Using penetrating method from St. 4 to St. 6, and from GB 14 to Yuyao. Apply
moxibustion on some points. Retain the needles for 20 – 40 minutes. Treat daily. 10 sessions is a
course. Take 3 days without treatment between 1st. and 2nd. Course. In addition, the patients apply
hot water bottle at affected side of face 15 minutes, once per day. Advise the patients keep the
affected side of face warm and avoid cold air or water.

Conclusion
Therapeutic effect of acupuncture and moxibustion is remarkable and certain on treatment of
different facial paralysis. The therapeutic effect is related to the level of facial nerve damaged. The
lower the level of nerve damage, the better the therapeutic effect and lesser time needed to recover.
Child patients, young and middle aged adult recover fast than the elderly. Earlier the patients have
acupuncture treatments after the discovery of the facial paralysis, the better chance of recover
completely.
