Observation on Therapeutic Effect of Chronic Facial Spasm with Hanging-needling
Acupuncture Therapy

(Abstract)
Purpose: To observe therapeutic effect of hanging-needling therapy on chronic facial spasm.
Method: 150 cases of chronic facial spasm were randomly divided into 3 groups. Hanging-needling
Acupuncture (Observation) group (50 cases) was treated with hanging-needling therapy once per
day. Regular acupuncture treatment group (50 cases) was treated with regular acupuncture therapy
once per day. And medication group (50 cases) administrated orally phenytoin sodium.
Result: After 10 day treatment, the effective rate in both the Hanging-needling Acupuncture group
and regular acupuncture group was better than that in the medication group with significant
difference (P < 0.005).

Conclusion: Acupuncture therapy is effective for chronic facial spasm and the hanging-needling
acupuncture therapy increase the therapeutic effect significantly.

- Complete recovery: Facial spasm stopped completely, and no recurrence within 6 month after
the treatments. - Significant improvement: facial spasm stopped completely after 10 day treatment, but had
recurrence within 6 month. - Some improvement: Facial spasm was less intensity and frequency after 10 day treatments.
- No effect: No change after 10 day treatments.
Conclusion: Acupuncture therapy is effective for chronic facial spasm and the hanging-needling
acupuncture therapy increase the therapeutic effect significantly.
